The Nikodem Plot
Thousands of years ago, when man seemed to spite each other more than anything else, three continents fought. They were Nikodem, Aisling and Terminus. Humans at the time could only make groups of three people. Deaths were not uncommon among the small clans. There was but one ray of light that could save them from their own fate, a man known as the peace bringer. He was known as this because he never engaged in battle with another and was generally liked by all. Many started to think he was a god. They called him “The Dream that Will Save Us All”, but there were some who despised him and the peace he brought. In fact, these groups (as few as they were) knew that if they could stop him they could take the world one continent at a time. Their leader wasn’t to be trifled with, many knew him as “The Nightmare that Shall Bring Ruin and Destruction”.
The day finally came when the two legendary leaders were able to bring their people together. “The Dream” was able to unite the people of Aisling together under the belief that peace was the ultimate goal of all. “The Nightmare” thought differently. His followers of the Kingdom of Nikodem believed that power was the only way to sustain complete and utter control. Nikodem and Aisling were two countries separated by a sea and a country. In the middle of those seas sat a lone country. This was the only country where people were of mixed thoughts and they were oblivious to the feud between The Dream and The Nightmare. You see, The Nightmare sought to control everything-not just one continent. The Nightmare was no fool though; he knew he could not take the country of Aisling without suffering severe casualties. So, he decided he would take the next three years to build his military. The Dream soon learned of this plot and he too, although he tried to reason with The Nightmare, spent the same amount of time building up a military. The Nightmare was growing impatient and soon had many huge ships built, which carried loads of soldiers, archers, and mages to Terminus (he knew that this country would have no resistance whatsoever). The Dream had done the same as The Nightmare, but his soldiers did not have the goal of oppressing the people of this country. No, their people brought many goods and soon won the country’s support. Yet, this wouldn’t have much impact on The Nightmare at all.
Finally, The Nightmare was reaching the middle of Terminus with much anticipation to finally show The Dream that he was a fool. Of course, the two leaders were very brave and they both lead their men into battle. The last battle of the two nations would soon shatter all of existence. The Dream looked across the plains and he saw the grass lightly waving in the wind and the sun half hidden behind a dark cloud; what was wrong with this picture? He kept wondering what would happen. He knew that The Nightmare’s army was not but a few minutes away and he could not help but worry. The Nightmare on the other hand was fairly pleased: he waited all these years to finally show The Dream that peace would never be as long as he was around.
The Nightmare felt a strong gust of wind and a drop of rain. He decided it was time. The Nightmare looked upon the faces of his soldiers and raised his sword high. He shouted with a great force and then charged with merciless fury at the large plain ahead. The Dream saw The Nightmare, he knew there was no turning back now and he too rushed off toward the army. The two armies were both equally matched. In fact, it was said that without their leaders they would both have 10,000 soldiers in that battle alone. The first soldiers to clash were The Nightmare and The Dream. They both fought as if neither accepted the fact that they were equal. It was many hours later that the fighting ceased. The Nightmare looked at his opponent, he had noticed the eerie silence and looked around. Soldiers were everywhere: bodies lay asunder and nothing was completely clean of blood. As The Dream gazed at his fallen soldiers he saw their spirits enter within him. The Nightmare saw that his soldier’s spirits were coming to him as well. Due to the great physical strain of the spirits entering their bodies both leaders fell to their knees.
The Dream’s and The Nightmare’s power was too much to handle, but The Nightmare wouldn’t die without taking his opponent with him. So, The Nightmare took all his energy and released it into the ground. This started an eruption, which shook all of the continents. The Dream fell, he had also released his energy, but against his will. When the major powers combined it sank all of the continents, except a small part of Nikodem. Yet something very odd happened that day. It seemed as if The Nightmare and The Dream’s bodies were floating up and slowly the spirits of their soldiers followed toward the light, clouds, and sky. These souls entered the remaining humans on the part of Nikodem that wasn’t destroyed. The humans fell once the souls entered their bodies and slowly the soldier’s spirits took over. Thus, when the humans woke, they were nothing more than the soldiers destroyed moments before.
The souls of the soldiers entered these innocent humans and thus took over their conscious mind. This created the Dreams and Nightmares.
1,000 years later…
Today, the Dreams and Nightmares still live among the humans. However, these Dreams and Nightmares, figments of the soldiers thousands of years ago, have forgotten of that terrible battle. They only know that they must rid the world of their age-old opponent. The Dreams cling to a human partner, acting as their guardians and friends. They protect the humans from the dreadful Nightmares that plague and wish to destroy them and their world. Today, they still fight the battle that their ancestors unknowingly continued.
The only ones who can recall the conflict that happened a thousand years ago are the two leaders of the Dreams and Nightmares, but even they wish not to remember it and keep it amongst themselves.
And so the tale continues…
